For Professionals :: Understanding Birth Best Practices

See What You Read was created to simplify your teaching in a class setting, at bedside, or for parents at home on their own.

The booklet was designed for ease of use, with its convenient size, color-coded chapters, and glossary-index for quick reference.

The commercial-free See What You Read website is set up to help users easily find the video clips they want to watch, along with helpful interactive web tools and PDFs that provide important supplemental information. Plus, its compatibility with smart phones and tablets makes it accessible from anywhere. Finally, the optional weekly My Baby & Me automatic emails provide parents with concise, easy-to-understand childbirth information and advice timed to their due date.

The booklet and website can be used several ways:

For Multi-Week Classes
The chapter divisions of See What You Read: Understanding Birth correspond with the structure of most common childbirth classes.

  • For four-week classes, two chapters can be studied per class. If your class does not fall into four parts, assign certain page numbers and include them in your class outline so parents know which sections to review for class.
  • The video clips support the material you cover in class. Watch video clips* in class and encourage parents to watch the corresponding video clips online (at home) and to print out the PDFs for the chapter you cover.
  • Since parents can use the book and website at home after class, visit the website during your teaching to show parents how to log on and use all its features.
  • Remind parents to sign up for the My Baby & Me weekly emails. After class, send parents an email inviting them to log on. You can find a sample email here and a handy email sign-up sheet to use in class here.

For Single Day or Weekend Classes
See What You Read helps with the challenges of time-crunched classes.

  • When you don't have time to provide in-depth information on a certain topic, assign the related video clips and PDFs to watch at home. Make sure to include the specific clips and PDFs you want parents to explore after class in your course outline. (Example: Review the benefits of breathing during labor on pages 32-33 in your book, and then practice along with the "Breathing Exercises" video clip on the website in Chapter 4. Print the "Personal Relaxation Chart" and fill it out with your labor partner.)
  • Visit the website during your teaching to show parents how to log on and all the features it includes. Remind parents to sign up for the My Baby & Me weekly emails. After class, send parents an email inviting them to log on to the website. You can find a sample email here.

For Women on Bed Rest
Parents who are unable to attend a traditional childbirth class can benefit from See What You Read.

  • If a woman is on bed rest at the hospital, an antepartum nurse or childbirth educator can review the content with her as needed, including watching videos* from the website. You can help her log on to the website for the first time and show her all of the available features.
  • Although some of the PDFs allow the user to fill in blank fields and save, you can also print copies of the PDFs. You can choose the PDFs that are specific to the family's unique situation. For example, families expecting twins might appreciate a copy of "Information for a Multiples Pregnancy."
  • For a woman at home on bed rest, follow up with her to answer questions. Remind her to log onto the website and explore the video clips and suggested web links. Encourage her to sign up for the My Baby & Me weekly emails from the site as another way to reinforce her learning.
